Lazy Generation

I come from a “lazy generation”.
I’m constantly reminded I have so much more
compared to those who came before…
But isn’t that the point?
Isn’t it our job to fix the bad
So the next generation won’t hurt like we have?
Isn’t it our job to bring more joys
Than there was when we were girls and boys?
So why are we criticized and torn apart
When we choose to focus on stories and art,
When we want to spend our lives
Seeing the world
Before we’re too old and all we have are the memories –
What is the problem with that?

I come from a generation that was raised on the idea
Success is the expectation, but it’s also the exception,
And anything less than perfection means rejection
And people focus on the bad more than the good –
1 failure after a thousand successes
Is still a failure, if they’re to be understood.

So the question I ask today is this:
How can we succeed when we’re meant to fail?
When every new step is a wall to scale?
How to succeed when we know we’re doomed to fall
And every day we’re bound by all
The expectations and dreams that never have seen
And never will see the sun and the green
That no longer exists in this world we dream.
And the light at the end of the tunnel is there
But maybe it’s a mirage and no matter how much we stare
We’ll never know if it’s real or not
And we’re all just Tantalus in our pool of dreams,
Stretching for the fruit but it’s just out of reach.
But now I’m just rambling,
And it’s not like anyone’s even listening.
We’ve all got work to do –
Rest is for later, after the bills are paid
And hunger is solved and world peace has been made.
And it’s not like anyone cares what I have to say
I’m used to it at this point, all the jokes and degradation
Because, like I said, I come from a lazy generation.
